I've been saying for years that much of Left/Socialist social policy vis a vis drugs, sex work, etc. are functionally identical to the Libertarian position. The western Left, even ostensible socialists, have really internalized an individual-centric approach to drug policy( among other things,), and are not viewing anything in terms of the greater societal impact. I have family who are heroin and methamphetamine users, and so of course I support keeping them out of prison; however, the socialist position has to address more than simply decarceration and a laissez-faire approach to drug use, especially hard narcotics. Because the western Left is so libertine, however, drug permissiveness has become a sacred cow, and you are a fascist if you dispute it.

12:50 That's how we got to where we are with Biden vs Trump. It didn't just "happen" at random. This is the product of decades of people being told they need to go with the flow and support the centrist candidates instead of fighting for more leftist candidates, AND the product of electoralism being the ONLY thing that most people do. Voting for the centrist is okay as a DELAYING tactic simply because the centrist will only SLOW DOWN the rightward shift (they have been "finding the middle ground" so much that the "middle ground" today is proto-fascism if we're being generous) rather than fight against it, but if all you do is vote nothing will change. At least not for the better. 27:45 Case in point. They'll adopt the rhetoric and agendas of the far right far easier than they will do anything but pay lip service to the issues of working people or evidence-based approaches to the issues they lean right on. And we're told to support that every election at every level, "because Republicans." Anyone who pushes that line, read MLK's Letter from Birmingham Jail and try to argue that you're not the "white moderate" in this. Because it's that excuse for why not to vote for left candidates EVERY election, not just the ones with Trump.

I think julia louis dryfus spoke about this actually and was on the money. The truth is Corporate consolidation, leads to more of the industry being "for profit" rather than for art. Studios want to make 4 movies a year, and each to make a Billion. They have to cater to every demographic for that to happen. it has to be overproduced. This ultimately leads to the death of the superhero genre imo. Where at some point every superhero movie was indistinguishable from the last. Their goal was to spend 200M on 1 movie, and make it make 1Billion. up to a point that it killed the entire genre. We are seeing studios do this more and more. AI im sure can make those movies, but the heart of cinema, art, will always be human. and i dont think AI could ever really capture that

I think the thing not mentioned is that needle exchanges and injecting rooms allow addicts who aren't looking to get sober yet an environment where they can avoid HIV and can be saved if they OD. It creates the conditions for people coming into those centres to be reached out to by social workers and get addicts on a path to recovery. Choosing between the two leaves addicts with the choice of either safety using drugs or withdrawal in treatment. I think a lot of people who would ignore the latter are saved by the former. It is complex though no doubt about that

we need to have an open approach to drug use to END THE STIGMA. Carrying on like drugs haven't helped people survive, like they offer no benefits, you just continue to alienate people who use. "Drugs are bad, M'kay" is never going to help people. You need to be willing to accept people for who they are, where they are at, and not judge them, in order for them to recover. No one is pretending addiction is "okay" we are acknowledging it's real and that the people living with it are not inherently bad. If there was no stigma, great, but we battle every day the attitude that because drugs are bad the people who use them are bad. This perpetuates a harmful vicious cycle.

I mean I agree with an implication out of what was said [even if not the intended point.] There is an inherent contradiction in this idea of legalizing drugs while simultaneously talking about & acting as though any drug use by people is an addiction that needs treatment provided by professionals. However, that idea is part of the problem in my view. No other substance or activity which routinely have people diagnosed as addicted to it works in that sort of fashion [alcohol, gambling, sex, etc...] With all those other things people are said to have an addiction to it whenever they are unable to moderate their engagement with it to the point that it begins to negatively effect other areas of their life outside that specific activity. [i.e. they gamble away most the money for necessities like bills, food, rent, etc... or they lose job(s) because they show up drunk or drink throughout the day on most days, etc...] I've always felt that drugs should be legalized, or decriminalized, to among other things try & remove that stigma & view of drug use so that it is looked at similarly to how other things people engage in which aren't "good" for them but they enjoy doing. i.e. Something that isn't "good" for them & therefore needs to engaged in responsibly & in moderation. And if it didn't have the criminal/social stigma attached to it then the people in someone's life is more likely to have a better view so they can try & intervene if someone does have an issue it/them [like what occurs with alcohol, gambling, or any other thing that is associated with addiction.] Because while I am unwilling to say every single problem that every single person who has had "issues" with drug use can be attributed entirely to the ramifications of the criminal/social stigma a significant portion of them for a huge majority of people are. I don't want this comment to be too long so I will end it there, but I see you are responding to some comments so I am willing to engage on this topic & also go into further details of my own thoughts on the matter. I would consider myself & most others would consider by & large a pretty far left politically speaking, I do support drug legalization/decriminalization [at least based on my understanding of the issues currently,] I personally used a variety of drugs on a pretty daily basis for a decade & half, I sold drugs & at a scale beyond some local corner dealer for a number of years [mostly marijuana,] I've never had any legal trouble beyond 1 speeding ticket that was reduced to an equipment violation, & with more than few people I sold to [with varying degrees of frequency & not just marijuana,] being middle-aged & people from all sorts of occupations, including professionals [even some lawyers, one judge, a few doctors, a nurse, etc...] so beyond my own personal experience I've seen first hand a number of people who are able to responsibly use drugs without them being a problem in their lives.

extremely disappointed in left reckoning: portugals failings were a direct result of defunding of their healthcare system - the wait for a bed at a treat center went from days to a year. and even then the uptick in the data is nuanced in that because of the destigmatization of drug use more people were willing to self report usage. also: equating leftists in favor of decriminalization with whacko libertarians? completely uncalled for. this is the sort of content i would expect from anna kasparian from tyt.

31:45 This is why "join a union" is just a baby step in the right direction. Leftists focus entirely too much on organizing workplaces while outright ignoring the necessity of organizing communities: the places people live. An organized workplaces is really important and I won't argue against it, but organized livingplaces tie workplaces together, taking it from "that union is fighting for the benefit of their workers" to "the people of that community are fighting for the benefit of all of the workers that are part of that community, and the improvement of the community itself." I haven't seen any leftist media which actually focuses on the "how" of organizing. Plenty of "capitalism bad," plenty of "here's a good/not bad candidate," but no (that I've seen) "this is the process of organizing, starting with just you the individual in an atomized society." Channels like this need to spend time on that if they want to actually help people organize and democratize...and push things leftward. Criticizing has its place, but it's TOTALLY POINTLESS if there is no counter "now let's talk about how to go about affecting change in our lives." You know, the thing that draws in so many people to the right, but in a healthy/positive direction instead of leading them towards fascism.

This is a bad take. And I thought ya'll believed in bodily autonomy. Shame. Drugs should be legal, because being an addict shouldn't be a crime. I shouldn't go to jail for being an addict. I should go to the hospital or a treatment facility... *not jail*. That's what I want. I want to be allowed to put whatever substance I deem worthwhile in my body, and not go to jail for it. I should be allowed that, even if you want to poopoo on that notion. It isn't your place to tell me what I can or can not put in my body. Secondly, you have made a dangerous error. Drugs are not a monolith. They cover wide ranges and entire fields/spectrums of effects. Are we talking cannabis? Or are we talking opiods? Acid or meth? You can't treat this as if there are any one size fits all solutions. Some drugs are just poisons that are addictive... and some drugs humanity has been doing since the literal Stone Age without much of a problem. So no, clearly drugs are more complex than "drugs bad, m'kay." Thought ya'll hated DARE? Thought ya'll hated big pharma? Thought ya'll hated the prison industrial complex? These takes serve those things, and are almost the very same talking points. You wanna solve the drug problem? Solve poverty and get rid of big pharma profit seeking. Don't just keep it illegal. That is stupid and clearly doesn't work.

This is pretty bad. It seems like a non sequitur to suggest that addiction follows from the presence (and legality) of drugs when this is well studied. Addiction follows from the ABSENCE of community, from uncertainty, from loneliness, from stress and desperation, etc.. Things that Portugal , for instance, has not addressed. This take reminds me of so many years of pointless "left" orgs in America.. MLs and the ISO and REvCom et al who get high on their seperate-ness and their insular formulas, who "organize" the academic class and produce newspapers almost no one (who buys them) will read. (I remember sometime in the 00s when ISO must have had some internal decree about 'proper socialist haircuts' because the ones who regularly tried to recruit me all suddenly had very tidy locks, all at once. Minor in the whole sweep of things but still pretty creepy.) Sometimes.. with the wild popularity of a few socialist streamers and content creators, I have gotten the feeling we are finally abandoning those wholly anachronistic rightward-deviations of Marxism.. then I see not only this take but the smug defense of this take in the comments, accusing people of being 'free-marketeers'..it gives me flashbacks to those sad doldrums.

You agree prohibition is bad but .... what? It's ok when it's a scary drug that you don't use? How is that compatible with socialist ideology? Is alcohol not a drug? Alcohol is one of the few drugs that helps kill other people, not just the users. Do you ignore that caffeine is a drug also? Are you going to make the factually untrue claim that caffeine is "different" or non-addictive like those other, "more scary" drugs? Have you ever tried to take coffee from a habitual coffee drinker? They will fight you. Just a couple ignorant hacks in a circle jerk is all I see, patting each other on the back for having similar yet superficial complaints but offer ZERO alternative solutions. If this is the highlight of your entire vid where there's "more context" then unfortunately for you, I've seen everything I need to see. *Unsubscribed.

Also without know what substances your talking about it's hard to make a judgement call. Like are weed talking weed and LSD or are we talking opioids and heroin?

The alternative after democratic 'socialists' fail to get elected and roll over for liberals isn't a socialist program to treat addiction. Until y'all get better organized, the alternative to a capitalist dystopia where drug addicts are criminalized is a capitalist dystopia where they aren't. Y'all only need to look in the mirror to see who's shitting the bed as much as any other progressives. For all its flaws, the decriminalization program in Portugal is better than what you've had to offer. What you've offered isn't a socialist alternative. It's whining. There was no suggestion here. You could make calls to action for your listeners to take action to get your own ideas implemented. I don't know why you don't. For as long do no more to end the War on Drugs by complaining on your podcast, you're going to keep letting poor and working people die.

The issue is that when you make drugs illegal, you create an extremely dangerous black market full of drugs that are extremely toxic, with no way to test for safety. You also make addicts scared of seeking help for a variety of reasons including losing their job and/or their children. When drugs are legal you can guarantee a safe supply and provide education and addiction treatment without stigma. This isn't libertarian ideology. It's literally science based harm reduction. This is a bad video.

Like it or not, that black market has been around for as long as any product or service they're offering. It's the pre-existing condition that a simple downsizing of the government (or whatever simplistic solution 'libertarians' blurt out) will only exacerbate

    • @ah7180

Living in NY and seeing what liberals idea of legalization entails, I can tell you that a "black market" will exist regardless. People selling drugs on street corners don't have the capital or business acumen to navigate the legal bureaucracy that has been created. If you were going to legalize all drugs, you would need really strict enforcement on import. I don't know what the solution is here, but a hands off approach wouldn't work without a significant change in our social structure.

I've been thinking about language problems for left wingers. Your video reminded me of a suggestion or two for left wing political language in America. For one, many in America, especially people that don't discuss politics a lot, use the term "Liberal" as a slur. It means anything from Woodrow Wilson to MLK. It doesn't mean anything! At least not ideologically. It means Democrat, or sometimes disloyal Republican or Independent. Also, the right wing has similarly inoculated people against words such as Communism and Socialism. You may as well be saying you're enemies of the state. Your background is a totalitarian language space where you're going to have to define your terms in order to be intelligible to a broad audience. At some point you're going to have to adapt. I think American Socialism and Communism should simply be labor or worker politics. It doesn't need a fancy academic name, in fact it's easier to avoid the right's inoculations if the words chosen are common ones. The Soviets, Chinese, and historical Cold War adversaries should probably own those terms Socialism and Communism, if they're going to be more narrowly defined. Also, using the term "Liberal" as a slur for right wing Democrat is just fine! It works well enough with the academic definition. The history of politics is written in the shifting definitions of its vocabulary. I suggest thinking about your language in a different manner. Especially given the constraints of the totalitarian anti left wing background.

@@brentoncarter4275 Was your comment intended to prove that you didn't understand the point of the comment? The word "liberal" is a contested political definition. Different people use the word different ways. I have no idea what you meant when you typed liberal, because you never explained it. You have a meaningless comment there. This is a side effect of you butchering language. It's not about having the right definition in your head, it's about being able to explain it. You didn't, so I don't know what you're talking about!

when rightwing conservatives like biden get called socialists, calling socialism worker politics won't stop a single person from calling them socialists. like bernie has proven it's far stronger to instead call yourself socialist even if you're a social democrat because it removes all power from using it as a slur. the correct response to being called socialist is "thank you for the compliment", then continue with a list of worker-friendly social policies rich people oppose.

    • @ywtcc
      @ywtcc 4 дня назад

@@babstra55 try moving to a different country and see if you figure out how to adapt your language. The point is to communicate ideas, not to show people up. You're not going to get people to stop saying things, and it's not something you should argue for as a goal. Some people think capital taxes are socialism, some think they're common sense. Do you actually want to convince a non socialist? Then call it common sense.

I disagree w the premise that theres a tension between durg legality and treatment based policy. Drugs should be legal because its beneath the dignity of people to have that degree of government interference in their behavior, and drug addicts should receive all the help necessary because its beneath the dignity of people to live on the streets in despair. Completely compatible positions.
